    Gene & family,
Mert was a great man and fun to work with. He was a mentor to me and many other young guys in the oilfield. I enjoyed meeting him for lunch or dinner frequently in 1985/86 while working together on sister drilling rigs near Cuero, TX. Mert was full of practical knowledge and wisdom not only regarding the oilfield, but life in general. I extend my sympathy to you all and will keep you in our prayers.

My deepest and sincere condolences to all of the Newell family and friends. Mert was a good man just as was written! I loved him like my own Grandfather. I will not ever forget the laugh he and I had when he asked me what do we do with all the donkeys (here in South Africa) and I looked at him and said “they are used as lion bait” …. He completely went white and was shocked and when I realized he liked donkeys I said no I am just joking…he then relax and had a laugh about it and I told him the people here actually use them as transport. Then he was much happier with that answer. His love for his horses and cattle was amazing.

I pray God will comfort all you in this time of your loss. Covering you all with prayers for peace that Mert is actually where God wanted him to be now.

Sending all my love and huge hugs,
    Bridgitte Vandeventer-Potgieter
